Chelsea against Liverpool’s breakaway TV rights plan

Chelsea have shown their disapproval of Liverpool’s proposal for clubs to sell their television rights on an individual basis.

The Premier League currently sells the rights of all 20 clubs to overseas broadcasters and splits the money equally between every team.

However, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre recently put forward the idea of allowing clubs to sell those rights themselves, in the hope of negotiating better deals for the clubs with larger global fan bases.

“We are supportive of the Premier League on this and want to continue with the way they sell [TV rights] collectively,” said a Chelsea spokesman.

Under the terms of the current deal, each club in the Premier League receives £17.9 million a season, and many other clubs have echoed Chelsea’s sentiments by criticising Ayre’s proposal.
