Espanyol’s Javi Lopez prepares to welcome friends from Betis

Javi Lopez prepares to face old friends on Thursday night as current club Espanyol entertain former employers Real Betis.

Defender Lopez spent seven years of his youth and professional development at the Seville-based club before transferring to Catalonia in 2007. The 25-year-old admitted he is still fond of Los Verdiblancos after making many friends there.

“It was a beautiful time of my life. I would talk a lot with [Jose Alberto] Canas and I lived only 10 minutes away from Isidoro [Gomez].

“I’ve never played against Betis and hopefully the Coach will select me on Thursday. The seven years through the ranks at Betis were a major step in my training and I keep beautiful memories.”

However, the player warned that his allegiance is with Espanyol now and that friendships will be put to one side in midweek.

“Since I came to this club, all my family to the death follows Espanyol. The priority [on Thursday] is the three points and that is it. Moreover, friendship is for when you are out of the field because inside, nothing.”
