Gullit spent time as a manager in both leagues, working at the Los Angeles Galaxy and Terek Grozny in his past two roles. The Dutchman believes that the way the leagues are developing and producing good players can only benefit their chances of becoming a major force on the international stage.
‘The MLS is now rated by a lot of people. It is a very good competition with huge potential in terms of players. In Russia, there is a great development. Good teams, very good footballers and a strong league. They are doing well’, Gullit said.
The former Holland international called for the MLS salary cap to be raised to a similar level as the other bigger sports of basketball and American football in America. Gullit believes that the popularity of the game among school kids does not follow into college, when big money can be earned from scholarships in other sports.
