Benfica midfielder Nicolas Gaitan is a transfer target for Manchester United, but the Red Devils may have to meet a £40m release clause, according to the Daily
Gaitan, an Argentine international, impressed in Benfica’s 1-1 draw with the Premier League champions last month and has attracted suitors across Europe with his impressive performances. The 23-year-old signed a new five year deal with the Portuguese giants earlier this week, which sees him double his salary to £2m, but that will not deter United.
United are keen to bring in a creative midfield player and after troubles with securing a deal for Wesley Sneijder, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson sees Gaitan as the next option. The club are also monitoring Anderlecht midfielder Lucas Biglia and could make a move for him if a deal fails to materialise for Gaitan.
There have been troubles with attracting Europe’s top attacking midfielders this summer for Ferguson, who missed out on Samir Nasri, Luka Modric and Wesley Sneijder in the summer transfer window.
