Preston North End are understood to have made Leeds United striker Billy Paynter their top transfer target according to the Lancashire
Manager Phil Brown discussed the need for extra firepower after Iain Hume hobbled off in Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Huddersfield to add to injuries already sidelining fellow forwards Neil Mellor and Jamie Proctor.
Paynter is believed to be frustrated at a lack of first-team football at Elland Road and manager Simon Grayson revealed last week that they are willing to loan him out as long as it isn’t to a divisional rival.
This put the Lilywhites on alert with the deal hinging on how much they are willing to contribute to the former Swindon striker’s wages.
Brown spoke to the Lancashire Evening Post today and said: “I would envisage that as Iain Hume has gone down with an injury, we would bring someone in today. It is vitally important to bring someone in because it would give everyone a lift.”
