A controversial penalty meant Real Mallorca registered their first point under new Coach Joaquin Caparros.

Valencia started well and restricted Mallorca to playing a counter-attacking game in the first half. Playing with intensity and verve, they exploited the frail Mallorca back-line to snatch a goal on 38 minutes through Adil Rami. Caparros appeared to understand the tactics deployed by the opponents as he encouraged his side to asphyxiate the away side’s creative play and take advantage of any opportunity offered to them.

However, emotions took over in the second half as Mallorca fought back, attempting to pin Valencia back. Their persistence finally paid off in the dying minutes of the game when Mehmet Topal was thought to have used his hand to control a ball thus conceding a penalty. Replays showed the action to be involuntary but the score-line left Valencia forced to accept only one point.
