Rooney must pay for his mistake says Gullit

UEFA were right to punish Wayne Rooney with a three game ban following his red card against Montenegro, according to former Dutch international Ruud Gullit.

Gullit won the European Championships with Holland in 1988 and has backed UEFA over their decision to suspend Rooney for the group stages of the 2012 tournament. The Dutchman also called for those who believe there should be an appeal to take the punishment and accept that European football’s governing body will not change their mind.

‘I don’t see why anybody would want to appeal to have it reduced to one game. Why would UEFA do that? Then, they would have to do it for everybody else. Take it as it is. The boy (Rooney) knows what he did. If UEFA reduce it, everybody will go to them and ask why they should make an exception for Rooney’, Gullit stated.
