Smalling revels in Man Utd centre-back role

For only the second time this season in Manchester United’s first team, Chris Smalling was given the opportunity to play in his preferred role of centre defence against Otelul Galati last night, much to the young England International’s delight, according to the Daily Mail.

Smalling has produced a series of assured displays for both club and country at right back so far this term, which is a role the ex-Fulham man is happy to perform if it provides the opportunity for him to become established at the highest level but he also concedes he would rather achieve this as a centre back.

“If I can contribute in any way, I will just give of my best. However, it was nice to be back in central defence. That is my favourite position and I want to play as many games as I can there,” declared Smalling.
