Smalling targets Olympics England spot

Chris Smalling has expressed an interest in playing in both the Olympic Games and Euro 2012 next summer, but insists Manchester United is his main responsibility, Sky Sports reports.

The Euros end on the 1st July and the Olympics begin 24 days later, extending to a week before the Premier League season begins. Many managers have expressed concerns at their players participating in both tournaments and leaving themselves fatigued before the season openers.

Smalling is ready to play for England and Great Britain in the tournaments, but will take priority with United over representing his country at the Euros and the Olympics.

He said: ‘I have to say that England is not my first target at the moment and neither are the Olympics. United is what I am thinking about. But towards the end of the season, I will be looking towards that and hopefully I might get into the England squad. Obviously, I’d love to go there’.
