Vermaelen fit for Arsenal clash with Chelsea

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has declared himself fit for the weekend’s fixture with Chelsea after his return from injury against Bolton in midweek, The Daily Mail reports.

The Belgian defender suffered a scare when he had calf cramp in the victory over Bolton, but he is ready to play in the London derby. The 25 year old has played just 10 times since April 2010 after an Achilles problem, but will be hoping to put his injury worries behind him.

Vermaelen said: ‘It was great to be back and to get time on the pitch. I felt fresh. I’m OK and am available for Saturday. If I come back from injury after a long time, I don’t believe in coming back and getting rhythm’.

Gunners club physio Colin Lewin has defended the club’s injury record in the wake of injury problems with Vermaelen, midfielder Jack Wilshere and striker Robin Van Persie and has stated that the club suffer an average amount of injuries, just like every other club.
