Vermaelen nears Arsenal return

Thomas Vermaelen is nearing a return to the Arsenal squad and coach Arsene Wenger believes he may be available for selection in two weeks.

The Belgian defender has been out of action since last August with ankle injuries and is close to returning to the Gunners’ starting XI to help alleviate Wenger’s defensive worries.

Arsenal’s backline has conceded 16 goals in seven games this season and Vermaelen is seen as the solution to the side’s defensive woes.

Wenger revealed that the former Ajax star could be ready to return within two weeks. He told the club’s official website: “He’s two weeks away. He is running out on the pitches. He looks alright but we have to respect the progression, you still have to give him two to three weeks to be competitive again.”
