Vermaelen signs new Arsenal deal

Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen has signed a new four year contract with Arsenal, which will keep him at the club until 2015.

The Independent reports that the player was encouraged to sign a new deal because of the financial results of the club and they will be hoping that this statement of intent from Vermaelen encourages skipper Robin Van Persie to pen a new deal.

Vermaelen missed last night’s victory against Marseille with an Achilles problem and has spent the last year struggling with injury worries following his successful first season in England. Van Persie’s current deal expires in 2013 and Wenger will be desperate for his striker to sign.

The Belgian defender declared that his intentions had always been to stay with the Gunners and the quality youth development gave him the impetus to sign the new deal and continue his career in North London.
