Vidic to call time on international career

Manchester United centre back Nemanja Vidic is to retire from International football, in the wake of Serbia’s failure to qualify for Euro 2012 after they lost 1-0 to Slovenia last night, the Telegraph has revealed.

Requiring to finish their qualifying group C campaign with victory over Slovenia to secure the runners-up spot behind Italy and with it a place in next month’s play-offs, Serbia fell short in a game that Vidic had a penalty saved and by the defender’s own admission may have represented his last International.

“It’s time for a change of generations and for some older players to say goodbye to the Serbian jersey,” said Vidic, who has 57 international caps from Serbia, during which time he has scored two goals and played in the 2010 World Cup.
