Wenger urged to spend if Arsenal are to keep van Persie

Arsenal has been urged to spend if they want to keep captain Robin Van Persie at the club.

Manchester City, Real Madrid and Anzhi Makhackala have all been linked with the Dutch striker, and are believed to be preparing bids for the striker in January. Bookmakers shortened the odds on the striker leaving the club by the end of next summer after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted he has been unable to discuss a new contract with Van Persie.

Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, former Arsenal player Nigel Winterburn believes the only way to keep Van Persie will be to make some more signings: “Arsene is obviously keen to keep him and can do that by winning games and strengthening his squad in January. And then again at the end of the season.”
