League Two strugglers Northampton Town have confirmed that Aidy Boothroyd has been appointed as the club’s new manager.
The former Watford and Coventry boss takes charge of a Cobblers side that is without a win in nine in all competitions and just three points above the dreaded drop zone.
Chairman David Cordoza was delighted with the appointment when he spoke to the club’s official website: “We are absolutely delighted to have Aidy on board, and that he has agreed to take up the challenge of moving this club forwards.
“We were fortunate to have interviewed a number of excellent candidates. We took on board lots of advice and plenty of opinions from people within the game and the message came back loud and clear that Aidy was the best candidate for the job.
“It is clear that Aidy knows the problems we have been suffering and he has done his homework on us. He is a good age, he already has plenty of experience from managing in the Premier League and Football League. He knows the challenge ahead of him and he has the hunger and the desire to succeed and follow up the phenomenal success he has already had in his career as a manager.”
Boothroyd’s finest managerial achievements undoubtedly came at Watford where he earned the Hornets a shock promotion to the Premier League after initially steering them away from relegation the year before.
He will face a similar task at Sixfields where the Cobblers wretched run of form has made the drop to non-league look a real possibility.
Boothroyd will start with a home clash with Crewe on Saturday and after a disappointing time in his last job at Coventry will be equally keen to turn his own personal fortunes around, as well as Northampton’s.
