Defoe to risk England place with Tottenham stay

The Daily Mail reports that Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe is prepared to risk his Euro 2012 place with England to stay and fight for his place at Spurs.

Defoe has been struggling to maintain a place in the Spurs starting eleven because of stiff competition, despite Tottenham staff feeling he has never been sharper or fitter than he is at the moment.

Although Defoe started against Rubin Kazan in the Europa League on Thursday, he expects to be on the bench for today’s game against Fulham, and is aware that a prolonged spell on the sidelines will damage his international chances.

A number of Premier League clubs have shown an interest, led by QPR but while Defoe would relish more first team action, he has a strong allegiance and deep loyalty to manager Harry Redknapp meaning he will stay at the club for now and fight for his place.
