Evra insists Man Utd need to score more

Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra has insisted that his side must look at how many opportunities they missed instead of focusing on the controversial penalty awarded to their opponents during their 1-1 draw with Newcastle United.

The Magpies were awarded a penalty in the second-half when Rio Ferdinand tackled Hatem Ben Arfa in the box but it looked like the centre-back won the ball cleanly, the referee gave a corner to the visitors but his assistant flagged for a penalty and the spot kick was given.

But Evra says that United shouldn’t focus on the penalty decision but should concentrate more on the amount of chances they let pass them by.

He told The Telegraph: “No, it wasn’t a penalty. It was a difficult decision, but the referee was responsible and he went to see the linesman to say: ‘Are you sure?’ He said: ‘Yes, it’s a penalty’, and the referee trusts his man. What can you say? We have to be more focused on how many chances we missed.”

“It is a draw, but you have to take the positives. I think the team have not played that way for a long time and created so many chances, but if you want to win the league, you have to score more goals.”
