Ferguson has said that the 33-year-old is no longer guaranteed a place in the first-team and the defender has not featured in Fabio Capello’s previous three squads.
The centre-back has acknowledged that he has to fight for a place in the starting XI as he faces competition from youngsters Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans but Ferdinand is determined to win his spot back and has stalled any contract talks with the club until the end of the season in order to concentrate on regaining a place in the first-team.
However, with 18 months left on his contract, if he finds breaking back into the team too much of an uphill battle then the former West Ham defender will consider leaving Old Trafford
