Following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle United, Manchester City have the chance to extend their lead to seven points if they can defeat Liverpool at Anfield.
City have been marvellous in the league so far this season and can boast the record of the only unbeaten side in the top flight, as well as one of the meanest defences. However, City have failed to win on their last eight trips to Anfield and will be concerned over that statistics. Last time out, they were put to the test in the opening half an hour against Newcastle, but overcame the challenge to win 3-1. The only injury concern was with striker Mario Balotelli, but he has recovered from a fever.
Liverpool are still riding the high of defeating Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge last weekend and will be confident of another success against the league leaders. Defender Jamie Carragher may have to settle for a place on the bench again following his return from injury and midfielder Stewart Downing is pushing for a recall to the side. The Reds also have striker Craig Bellamy available, who will face his former side for the first time since he left Eastlands.
Liverpool gave City a good hammering in the last outing at Anfield, when they won 3-0, and will be confident of tasting more success. However, Roberto Mancini’s side have been outstanding in the league and look set to have more quality to give them all three points in this massive Sunday evening clash.
