Mancini tells Richards to play smarter

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has told The Guardian his evaluation of his English full-back Micah Richards, who he believes can become a top defender in Europe but must remember to ‘pick up his brain’, referring to Richards’ lapses of concentration which are preventing him from being a great footballer.

Not only is preventing him being one of the best fullbacks around, it may also be what is preventing Fabio Capello from selecting him for the England squad, despite his impressive form so far this season.

Mancini however claims to understand Capello’s decision not to include Richards, “Micah is young. In the last year he has improved a lot, but he needs to improve more. He has good quality but sometimes Micah thinks he can play at only 50%. If Micah plays to 100%, he can become one of the top full-backs in Europe.”
