Martinez draws inspiration from Cruyff, Maturana, Sacchi and Toshack

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has hailed former managers for the way he forms his philosophy about coaching his sides.

One of his biggest influences was former Barcelona manager Johan Cruyff, who introduced the idea of possession football at the Nou Camp. Martinez looks to play a stylish game at the DW Stadium with current club Wigan and also played the same way when he was manager of Swansea.

Martinez also hailed the importance of former Colombia manager Pacho Maturana, former Wales manager John Toshack and former Milan boss Arigo Sacchi. The Spanish manager is always looking at football games for different cultures and different ways of playing football.

The Wigan boss said: ‘The manner of the way he (Cruyff) controlled the tempo of the game, he introduced the idea of possession football to Barcelona. It was a little bit of the start of what Barcelona are today. There are certain managers at certain football clubs that did things in a very different way, a very effective way and they brought impressive results’.
