Martinez praises the support of Wigan chairman Dave Whelan

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has hailed the importance that having a chairman like Dave Whelan has on his ability as a manager.

Whelan brought Martinez over from Spain back in 1995 as a player at Wigan and was able to bring the Spanish boss in from Swansea to help his side. The Latics survived on the last day of the season with a 1-0 win away at Stoke and look set for another relegation battle this season.

Martinez had the chance to move to Aston Villa this summer, but turned down the offer to continue the three year project that he and Whelan had discussed upon Martinez’s arrival. The Wigan boss has heaped praise on Whelan and thanked him for what he has done.

‘He (Whelan) has been a player and has played in every single division and a chairman in every division. He has a real football understanding that inspires you with his successful touch. It’s more than that, it is someone who allows you to work towards the long-term ambition of the football club and in that, respect his support and loyalty. In the summer, it was a chance to pay him back’, Martinez said.
