Rooney to make Man Utd return at weekend

Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is expected to return from injury for the visit of Newcastle United to Old Trafford on Saturday, manutd.com reports.

Rooney sustained a hip injury in the last Premier League outing against Swansea for United. That injury forced him out of the midweek fixture with Benfica, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed Rooney should return for Newcastle. Rooney has been deployed in a midfield role in the last few games for United and he may have to keep that position up with the injuries to Tom Cleverley and Anderson ruling them out for a while.

The United boss also revealed that the defensive element of the squad is returning to full health with the returns of Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic and England international Chris Smalling.

Ferguson said: ‘I think Wayne Rooney should be okay for tomorrow. He trained yesterday so hopefully he’ll be okay. We’ve got Vidic back after suspension, of course. Smalling is fit again, which is also a boost, and Rafael’s back as well. So the defensive part is okay. It’s in the midfield area where we’ve still got issues, with Tom Cleverley and Anderson.’
