Wenger eyes Ajax defender Vertonghen

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is interested in signing Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen according to The Daily Express, though he will face stern competition for the defenders signature.

The Belgian international has already declined an offer from Valencia, though Ajax manager Frank De Boer remains pessimistic of holding onto his star defender should a more attractive prospect approach Vertonghen: “He will only leave for an important club that plays in the Champions League.”

The 24-year-old is also reportedly being monitored by a host of Spanish and Italian clubs, and there has been rumours of interest from Arsenal’s local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, though Arsenal may be his favoured destination due to his friendship with former Ajax team-mate and fellow Belgian Thomas Vermaelen.
