Youthful Spurs defeated in Russia

Tottenham Hotspur came unstuck at the hands of Russian side Rubin Kazan as the Russians beat them 1-0.

Spurs had to make a 6,500 round trip to Kazan for the fixture and with manager Harry Redknapp back at home following heart surgery, the Spurs players could not give their manager a good result. Redknapp has been released from hospital after a procedure that inserted two stents into his heart to unblock coronary arteries.

Assistant manager Kevin Bond and first team coach Joe Jordan took charge of proceedings and Spurs were on the back foot for a lot of the game with goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini making some decisive saves. Rubin bagged the decisive goal 10 minutes into the second half thanks to a Natcho free-kick from just outside the Spurs penalty area.

Bond insists Redknapp is fine and is eager to come back to Spurs for the weekend’s fixture, but that is definitely too soon. Spurs now have two games left against Greek outfit PAOK or the trip to Dublin to take on Shamrock.
