Arsenal can jump to fourth place in the Premier League with a win over Wolves at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon.
Arsene Wenger’s side are suffering from injury problems in defence, but could see the return of defender Johan Djourou after a groin injury. Midfielder Alex Song returns following a ban, but Wenger is still without a recognised fullback. Kieran Gibbs was expected to return, but faces another month on the sidelines after groin surgery. The Gunners won late on at Villa Park last week thanks to a Yossi Benayoun header and will be looking for another win to start their festive period. Arsenal have only had two sides take points off them since October and are in great form.
Wolves, in contrast, are in poor form. Two wins in 15 is not good form, but they are still outside of the relegation zone. Mick McCarthy has no fresh injury worries and could see the return of Jody Craddock and David Edwards from hamstring and groin problems respectively. Wolves picked up a valuable point midweek against Norwich in a 2-2 draw. McCarthy is looking to keep Wolves from relegation for the third successive season, but faces a battle with a tricky Christmas period. The Molineux based side travel to Bolton on New Year’s Eve in a crunch fixture, before returning to the Black Country and hosting Chelsea on 2nd January.
Wenger’s side are in great form and will gain confidence from a big win at Villa Park in midweek. Wolves will be full of endeavour, but will not have the quality to stop Arsenal winning. Robin van Persie scored against Villa from the penalty spot in midweek and is a good bet to score again against Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.
