Barcelona acquire 50,000 members in just 12 hours on Chinese social network site

Barcelona Football Club have created a profile on Chinese social networking site Weibo after an agreement with Tencent following the recent visit to China by club dignitaries including President Sandro Rosell. The Barca hierarchy have been in the Far East in an attempt to open up new business opportunities in the region, and astonishingly in the first 12 hours of being launched more than 50,000 fans joined the site with the first message posted commented on by over 20,000 followers.

Didac Lee, the man responsible for developing the site’s new technologies, commented: “We knew Barcelona was the favourite football team in China but the volume of fans in the first few hours, and especially the rate of interaction from these first users, confirms that.”

The club’s profile on Google + already leads the company’s social networks rankings with over 22,000 fans, Barca having had a hand in the unveiling of the social networks pages and being present at the outset.
