Carragher: Lucas as important as Suarez

Jamie Carragher has admitted that losing midfielder Lucas Leiva for the season with a knee injury is as big a blow for Liverpool as losing forward Luis Suarez would be. Carragher states you cannot underestimate the influence the Brazilian has had on the team in 2011.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Carragher said: “For the last 18 months, in my opinion, he has been our best player. Luis Suarez has come in and done great things for the club but Lucas has been his equal in many ways.”

Jay Spearing or Charlie Adam are expected to be the candidates to take up Lucas’ midfield berth but Carragher knows that it is a legacy which will be hard to match: “He has been as good as anyone in the team this season and there is no question he will be a big miss.”
