Chelsea have been warned by Newcastle boss Alan Pardew that they would have to pay a substantial fee to sign midfielder Cheick Tiote, Metro
Tiote has been impressive since his signing last summer and has attracted the attention of Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas. The Ivory Coast international will be part of the African Cup of Nations squad for next month, but that has undeterred the Blues from making a bid. Pardew has made clear his stance over the move and believes that Newcastle are in a very good position financially to deal with offers.
Pardew said: ‘You never know with the window. It’s such a minefield of possibilities. We are always on our guard with Cheick, because we realise that to us, he is very, very important and it would be very, very difficult to get him out of here. He’s a big target, because he’s a great player and great players are going to be targets’.
Chelsea are eager to replace Michael Essien’s void in the midfield. John Obi Mikel has not been in good form this year and with Barcelona’s recent comments about current Blues anchor Oriol Romeu, Chelsea are eager to bring in some quality talent. Tiote has also attracted the attention of Italian side AC Milan, but their interest has died down since the summer.
