Dalglish confident in Downing ability

Ahead of Stewart Downing’s return to Aston Villa on Sunday with Liverpool, his manager Kenny Dalglish has insisted that the England winger was worth the £20m transfer fee paid out for him, despite recent criticism of Liverpool and Dalglish’s spending.

Downing will be expecting a hostile reception at Villa Park as last year’s Aston Villa player of the year left the club in the summer despite having stated a desire to stay at the club. However many believe he hasn’t met the high standards he has set himself at Anfield yet, but Dalglish told the Guardian that Downing has proved to be a valuable asset to the team so far.

“Stewart has made plenty of chances for us. He has had a few opportunities himself he has been unfortunate with. If you took a percentage of the chances where the woodwork was more kind to us then everybody’s stats would look better.”
