De Jong insists Man City will be Champions League force

Nigel de Jong insists Man City are close to dominating Europe despite exiting this season’s competition at the group stages.

The ten point haul Roberto Mancini’s side accumulated from their group would have seen them qualify from six of the eight groups this season and de Jong believes it offers evidence that his side will be a threat next season.

The Dutchman told the Manchester Evening News: “We are not far off from challenging in the Champions League. You have to make mistakes – and we did that this season – and learn from them.

“It’s all about experience and being consistent at this level. As a group we didn’t play in the Champions League until now, so this is a good experience.”
