Djourou ruled out for Christmas period

Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has been ruled out for three weeks after suffering an injury against Manchester City at the weekend, BBC Sport reports.

The Swiss defender hobbled off shortly after half-time and has been diagnosed with a groin injury. Djourou’s problem is another defensive issue to Arsene Wenger, who has seen Bacary Sagna and Andre Santos already suffer mid-term problems. Santos is expected back in February and Sagna is around two weeks away from fitness.

Wenger could see the return of Kieran Gibbs against Aston Villa in midweek, which would be a massive boost. Gibbs has not played since undergoing a hernia operation in October and is in line for a start following Djourou’s injury. The young Englishman would return to allow Thomas Vermaelen to move back into central defence after appearing at left-back following Santos’ injury.

The Arsenal boss confirmed the potential arrival of Gibbs after injury ahead of the City game. ‘He could be present at Aston Villa or the game after. Of course, you want him back and want him to play. I feel we suffered after completely reshuffling our defence (against City). Every injury is too difficult for us to cope with. Johan Djourou’s injury gives us a new problem and unfortunately we have no solutions’, Wenger said.
