Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing has brushed off the Aston Villa boo-boys and believes that the Reds’ 2-0 win yesterday shows his move was right, The
Downing’s new club dominated Villa at Villa Park yesterday and could have won by much more than the 2-0 scoreline. The England international was resoundly booed by the home crowd after his move from Villa to Liverpool this summer. Villa fans were disgruntled at Downing’s transfer request to force a move, but the former Middlesbrough man is undeterred.
The 27 year old was impressive on his first return to Villa and claims that the home fans have more to worry about than booing a former player. Liverpool currently sit in sixth place, level on points with fifth placed Arsenal, and Downing knows that his new side have all the quality in the world.
‘I knew I would get booed and get some stick, but that wasn’t a problem for me. I think they (the fans) gave up after about 50 or 60 minutes and turned on their own team. We were by far the better team. I think today proved a point in terms of showng why I wanted to come to Liverpool. It wasn’t to do with money, I’ve joined a top team’, Downing said.
