Ferguson reveals admiration for Jol

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has spoken of the admiration he holds for Fulham boss Martin Jol, manutd.com reports.

Jol and Ferguson face each other at Craven Cottage tonight as United look to keep pace with leaders Manchester City. A win for United at a tricky destination for them in the last few seasons will help them settle in to a favourable festive period comfortably. Ferguson gets a chance to see Jol again, a manager he was looking at for an assistant’s job at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman ended up losing out when Carlos Queiroz returned from an ill-fated spell at Real Madrid, but Ferguson praised the fantastic career Jol has had in Europe and with Tottenham. United will be looking to avenge the last three trips to Craven Cottage, where they have failed to win in any of them.

Ferguson said: ‘I knew Martin and actually spoke to him when Carlos Queiroz left the club. I spoke to him about joining us as assistant manager. Whilst I was talking with him, I had a phone-call from Carlos and realised he wasn’t happy at Real Madrid, so I made moves to bring him back at the end of that season. It was unfortunate for Martin, but it never stopped his career progressing. I think he’s a terrific manager and his record is good. He’s had great experience gathered at Hamburg and Ajax.’
