Ferguson tells team to forget Champions League failure

Sir Alex Ferguson has delivered a motivational speech to his Manchester United and has urged them to put the pressure on Manchester City, The Daily Telegraph reports.

United have closed the gap on the leaders to two points and have erased memories of the 6-1 thumping they received from City at Old Trafford. The Red Devils face City in the FA Cup third round at the Etihad Stadium on January 8th and Ferguson has urged his players to use the Christmas period to pile pressure on City before the cup tie.

Ferguson recognises the threat of City winning their first title since 1968 and has moved to fire up his United squad before the turn of the year. Midfielder Michael Carrick revealed that the United boss had them in for a talk about what he sees happening. United face QPR in the early Sunday kickoff and could go ahead of City in the league before Roberto Mancini’s side face Arsenal in the evening contest.

Carrick said: ‘He sat down with us the other day and just put things into perspective, reminded us what we’re here for and what this club is about. It wasn’t a rant or anything, it was a simple talk, but the way he does it is like no-one else. You could sense the whole room taking everything he was saying on board and really wanting to pull together and be prepared for what’s ahead.

‘He’s always had a good response from us in the past and I’m sure he’ll get one between now and Christmas’, Carrick added.
