Chelsea right back Paulo Ferreira is expected to wear a mask in today’s fixture with Fulham following an injury in the Thursday game with Tottenham, The
Ferreira had a protective shield moulded in time for today’s West London derby and should start at right back. The 32 year old fractured his cheekbone in a collision against Spurs, but is ready to play with the mask. Chelsea will need permission from referee Kevin Friend for Ferreira to wear the mask and will hope for good news with their current injury crisis. Branislav Ivanovic pulled up injured at right back against Spurs and Ferreira is needed to plug the gap until the Serbian returns.
The Portuguese defender has only made three appearances now for Chelsea this season and could get an extended run in the team if he performs against Fulham. Ferreira was bought in 2004 for £13m after impressing at Porto under then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and has won three Premier League titles with the Blues. Ferreira was expected to be sold in January, but the injuries in defence mean s that Villas-Boas will have to hold on to the 32 year old.
Villas-Boas has also refused to recall Alex, despite the injuries in defence. The Brazilian defender handed in a transfer request at Stamford Bridge and has been training alone since that moment. Villas-Boas sees the return of David Luiz and is also looking to Bolton defender Gary Cahill as a signing in January.
