Arsenal left-back Andre Santos has been ruled out for three months with ankle ligament damage and will miss the festive season, The
The Brazilian suffered the problem in the final Champions League group game against Olympiacos and the injury comes as a big blow to Arsene Wenger. The Gunners boss is without Kieran Gibbs also, his second choice left back, and Thomas Vermaelen had to stand in at left-back for the weekend’s win over Everton. Wenger is also without his two right backs Bacary Sagna and Carl Jenkinson and is coping with four centre halves across his backline.
Young Spaniard Ignasi Miquel is another option for Wenger, but the 19 year old prefers to play in the centre of defence. Wenger could look to sign some experienced cover on loan when the transfer window re-opens in January and Santos will not be back until mid-March at the earliest.
A club statement said: ‘We can confirm that, following investigations and subsequent medical opinions by club specialists, left-back Andre Santos will have surgery to repair ligament damage in his right ankle sustained in the game against Olympiacos last week. Andre will have surgery in Brazil this week and is expected to be out for around three months. Everyone at the club wishes him well’.
