Jones did not break jaw against Fulham

Manchester United have been given an injury boost with Phil Jones being told he has not suffered a serious facial injury, BBC Sport reports.

Jones was caught by a stray elbow from Fulham’s Clint Dempsey during the 5-0 win over the West Londoners on Wednesday. United feared that the 19-year-old may have broken his jaw or fractured his cheekbone, but X-rays have since shown there is no major damage. An injury to the England international would have added to a growing injury list at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson already has Darren Fletcher, Rio Ferdinand, Anderson, Tom Cleverley, Michael Owen, Nemanja Vidic and Fabio on the injury list, as well as Ashley Young. Young injured his knee in the same game after just returning from injury and will be out for a few weeks.

Jones is expected to be available for the Boxing Day fixture against Wigan at Old Trafford. Ferguson said: “Phil Jones should be OK for Monday. We feared the worst, but there is no break.
