Liverpool face Man City test in Carling Cup semi-final

Liverpool have been drawn against Manchester City in the Carling Cup semi-finals after their 2-0 win away at Chelsea in the quarter-finals, The Liverpool Echo reports.

The Reds could have drawn either Championship side Cardiff City or Manchester United’s conquerors Crystal Palace, but were left cursing their luck. City are unbeaten in the Premier League so far this season and are top by five points. The Manchester side drew 1-1 with the Reds at Anfield last weekend and progressed to the semi-finals with a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Liverpool make the trip to Eastlands in early January and return for the second leg at Anfield on January 23rd. The winners of the tie will make the trip to Wembley on February 26th. Reds manager Kenny Dalglish will take heart from the impressive performance that Liverpool showed against City last weekend and will be confident of a win. The two clubs last met in the league cup in 195 when the Reds won a third round tie 4-0 at Anfield.

Defender Jamie Carragher had earlier this week spoke of his desire to reach a final at the new Wembley, but his side will have to pull off another good performance to beat City. Roberto Mancini’s men will be looking to win the Carling Cup as their second trophy in 35 years following last season’s FA Cup triumph.
