Liverpool are on red alert after Spanish publication Marca
Villa has fallen out of favour at the Nou Camp and is behind Alexis Sanchez for a starting berth with the European champions. Sanchez started and scored in Barca’s 3-1 win over close rivals Real Madrid this weekend, increasing speculation over Villa’s future. Reports have suggested the future of Villa has depended on a fallout with teammate Lionel Messi. Barca paid €40 million for the Spanish international two years, but will expect a cut-price offer from the Reds if they are interested.
Liverpool’s goalscoring form has suffered so far this season and their £35m signing Andy Carroll has not been on fire since his move from Newcastle United. Villa plans to move in the summer and Liverpool will have to battle Premier League rivals Chelsea for the Spaniard’s signature. The Blues are reportedly offloading Liverpool old boy Fernando Torres for £20m in January, which is less than half of the £50m they paid the Reds.
Liverpool are eager to improve their attacking options and will enquire over Villa’s availability in the coming weeks. A signing of the Barcelona star’s magnitude will re-ignite the desire within the Liverpool community that they can win their first title since 1991.
