Liverpool worry as Lucas could be ruled out for the season

Liverpool are concerned that midfielder Lucas Leiva may be ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, The Telegraph reports.

The 24 year old suffered the injury in the latter stages of Liverpool’s 2-0 Carling Cup quarter final win over Chelsea. Lucas has been in good form in recent months, but a preliminary examination immediately after the game raised concern about cruciate damage. An injury like that will raise concern over an inevitable long-term absence.

Liverpool were still awaiting the results of the scan and have not made comment on the player’s condition, but the signs do not look good for the Brazilian. Lucas was superb in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City and with Steven Gerrard still injured, the 24 year old’s problem comes at a bad time for Reds manager Kenny Dalglish.

Lucas has transformed from his early Anfield days and has proved to be worth every penny of the £7m Rafael Benitez paid for him back in the summer of 2007. The midfielder adds a defensive dimension to Liverpool’s attacking play and will be sorely missed.
