Man City defender subject of racist abuse on Twitter

Police have appealed for information from the public regarding reports of racist abuse aimed towards Manchester City defender Micah Richards, The Daily Mail reports.

Lincolnshire Police launched an investigation after Richards’ official twitter page, OfficialMR2, was the subject of racist abuse. Angry fans contacted the police following the comments about the 23 year old defender and the offender, Twitter user, is said to be from the Lincolnshire area. Richards replied with ‘Love the racist abuse. Keep it coming.’

Racist abuse has been a theme on the social networking site for the past few weeks after Newcastle United striker Sammy Ameobi was targeted as well as Norwich City striker James Vaughan. Detective Inspector Andy Wardell, from Skegness CID, stated that Lincolnshire Police would make a proper inquiry and are not tolerating the offence.

Wardell said: ‘Whilst the investigation is still in its early stages, Lincolnshire Police will be conducting a robust inquiry and wish to make it clear from the outset that racist comments aimed at anybody, not just those in the media spotlight, will not be tolerated and those committing such offences can expect to be pursued and dealt with under the relevant legislation’.
