Man City target Europa League success

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini believes that the Europa League is an important trophy for his side and not just a secondary tournament, Metro reports.

City exited the Champions League after the result they needed in Villarreal did not happen. Napoli beat the hosts 2-0 and although City won 2-0 against Bayern Munich, they were unable to make it to the knockout stages. Mancini’s side are still on course for a memorable season despite leaving Europe’s elite competition and has told his players he wants at least two trophies.

The Premier League leaders are five points ahead of second placed Manchester United and have a two legged semi-final coming up in the Carling Cup as well as a tricky third round tie with United at Eastlands in the FA Cup next month. Mancini believes they can compete in the Europa League also and the Italian is looking for his side to bounce back quickly.

Mancini said: ’We are not United or Bayern Munich or Real Madrid. For us to win the Europa League is an important trophy. It is clear we wanted to win the Champions League, but this is not possible. We are disappointed, but this is normal. We wanted to go into the second stage and now we can do nothing. It is my opinion next year, if we play Champions League, we’ll do better. But it is important to finish well this year. I mean to maybe win two trophies.’
