Manchester United have targeted Crystal Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne as a long-term right back at Old Trafford, according to The
Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed with Clyne’s composure in Palace’s shock 2-1 win against United at Old Trafford last month and is ready to make a move. United will have to beat off competition from Newcastle, Everton, Aston Villa and Fulham for the 20 year old. Clyne is in popular demand and Palace could sell before the controversial Elite Player Performance Plan stops them receiving a good amount of money from United.
Ferguson has found difficulty in filling the void at right back deserted since Gary Neville’s retirement. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have filled in the role and Rafael da Silva had started to make the slot his own, before another injury problem ahead of the current campaign derailed his progress. Clyne’s contract runs out in the summer and United may look to a cut-price deal.
United could also be interested in Wilfried Zaha, who impressed for Palace at Old Trafford. The 18 year old winger was quality against the Premier League champions and United could look to bring another youth player in following a summer of young recruitment. Zaha has also seen offers from Liverpool and Spurs since his performance and is expected to leave Palace soon.
