Martinez backs Man Utd to prosper with Cleverley return

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez believes that Manchester United will pull clear in the title race when Tom Cleverley makes his return, The Daily Star reports.

United have suffered heavily from injuries so far this season, but have managed to stay level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side crushed Martinez’s Wigan 5-0 on Boxing Day to move level with City and can go top if they avoid defeat against Blackburn on Sunday.

One of the injured players has been 22 year old Cleverley, who has been out with a damaged ankle since October. The 22 year old starred at the beginning of the season, but suffered the injury in United’s 5-0 win at Bolton in September. Cleverley spent last season on loan at the DW Stadium and Martinez believes United will benefit from the freshness he brings in midfield.

Martinez said: ‘Tom will be refreshed and that could be the key for United. It’s going to be like having a new signing. He can make a big impact on the title race’.
