Real Betis board decides to back Pepe Mel

Despite the 2-1 loss at Osasuna over the weekend, the Real Betis board of directors has confirmed that Pepe Mel will continue as Coach until the end of the season. It was thought that Mel’s job was under serious threat, with the 48-year-old himself doubting he would continue in the role with defeat in Pamplona, but it has been unanimously decided he will carry on.

A run of one point from a possible 30 has seen the Andalusians plummet down the table to just one place above the relegation zone, yet the surprise news has come about mainly due to three underlying reasons at the cash-strapped club, who are still in administration: how much it would cost to pay the rest of Mel’s contract, doubts over who would be brought in to replace him and the good performance at Osasuna.
