Shelvey eyes first-team Liverpool spot

Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has spoken of his determination to launch his Anfield career, The Liverpool Echo reports.

Shelvey spent two months on loan at Blackpool this season and scored six goals in 10 games. With the midfield injury crisis the Reds are suffering, Shelvey has been recalled by Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish. The midfielder came off the bench late in last Saturday’s 1-0 win over QPR and feels that his spell at Championship club Blackpool helped him greatly.

Liverpool signed the 19 year old from Charlton for £1.7m, which was a big gamble. Shelvey is determined to show what he can do in the Premier League and spoke of the great honour in representing the Reds. The only other appearance made by Shelvey this season was a substitute role in Liverpool’s Carling Cup tie at Exeter City.

Shelvey said: ‘I feel that the time I spent away from the club really helped me come on as a player. But it also made me realise just how much I want to be playing in Liverpool’s first team. It’s so good to be back in and around the squad. I only got on for a few minutes on Saturday, but it was really special to be back out on the pitch in front of the fans’.
