Tottenham make bid for Bulgarian stopper

Tottenham have made a €6 million bid for FC Twente’s Bulgarian goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov, according to sources in the Dutch Press.

The 23-year-old signed for Liverpool in 2007, but never broke into the Merseyside club’s first team on account of being unable to secure a work permit. As such, he was sent on loan to Twente, before eventually sealing a permanent move to the Dutch club in 2010.

However, he could be set for a return to English football, with Spurs having singled him out as having the potential to be Brad Friedel’s eventual successor. With the American nearing the end of his career at the age of 40, understudy Carlo Cudicini only a few years younger at 38, and Heurelho Gomes wanting out of the club, Spurs are anxious to secure Friedel’s replacement before his retirement.
