Van Persie attracting attention from Real Madrid

Real Madrid are keen to sign Arsenal striker Robin Van Persie in the January transfer window, according to The Sunday Mirror.

Madrid are desperate to wrestle Barcelona’s stranglehold from the Spanish title, but failed to take their chances as Barca beat them 3-1 in the Bernabeu. Van Persie has been on form so far this season and has scored 33 goals in 2011, spearheading Arsenal’s revival of form following their poor start. Jose Mourinho is keen to bring the Dutchman to Madrid, but will have difficulty convincing Arsenal.

The Gunners sold Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri in the summer and with Van Persie’s contract coming to a close, Arsenal will be hoping the Dutchman signs. Van Persie is waiting on how Arsenal’s season pans out before he makes his decision and if the Gunners do not achieve Champions League football, he may be inclined to move to the Spanish capital. Van Persie is the current Arsenal captain and is prepared to commit to the club if they provide Champions League football.

If contract talks fail, Arsenal will rather sell early and make good money than lose their striker on a free transfer. Manchester City are interested in Van Persie, but the Dutchman knows that a move to another Premier League rival will break the hearts of Arsenal fans. A move anywhere would hurt, but Madrid are undeterred and are ready to pounce on Van Persie if Arsenal under-perform.
