Villas-Boas confident Blues can join Manchester clubs in title challenge

Andre Villas-Boas has indicated that there is increased pressure on Manchester City and Manchester United following Chelsea’s recent return to form, The Daily Mirror reports.

The Blues handed City their first league defeat of the season on Monday night and can reduce the gap to within four points of the leaders against Wigan. With City and United in action on Sunday, Chelsea can really put pressure on the Manchester clubs with a victory over the Latics. Villas-Boas has come under scrutiny at Stamford Bridge for his side’s performances, but feels that now United and City face challenges from the teams below them.

Villas-Boas said: ‘The fact that United are now only two points behind City changes the perspective on how the Premier League looks. I would say this – nothing will be decided in December and January. But now there is a stressful situation between the Manchester clubs and that gives us, the people chasing, the chance to shorten the distance if we do well’.

Chelsea travel to Wigan looking for their third successive win after triumphs over Newcastle and Manchester City in their last two fixtures. Villas-Boas faces a difficult festive season and is fighting on three fronts with the league, FA Cup and Champions League. Chelsea have been drawn with Italian side Napoli in the last 16 of Europe’s elite club competition, which takes place in February.
